Patrick's "Readiness Project" Includes Universal Pre-K
and Full-Day Kindergarten
EEA commends Governor Patrick for appointing Paul Reville as Secretary of Education, overseeing the newly created Executive Office of Education. Paul is a member of EEA's Campaign Advisory Committee and uniquely qualified to lead the next phase of education reform, including implementation of universally-accessible, high-quality pre-kindergarten and full-day kindergarten.

On January 15, 2008, the Readiness Project Leadership Council released an Interim Update as a first step in mapping out a strategic plan for education reform. The Interim Update highlights early education and care as one of three areas that warrant immediate attention and investment.

In October 2007, in
order to inform his comprehensive education reform "Readiness Project," Governor
Patrick hosted a town hall-style meeting on
early education and care with Representative Patricia Haddad and EEC Commissioner
Ann Reale at Somerset High School.
Early education and care supporters made a strong showing, sending a powerful statement
to Governor Patrick in support of high-quality universal pre-kindergarten
and full-day kindergarten.

In September 2007, Governor Deval Patrick appointed over 150 citizens from across
the state, from a multitude of professional disciplines, to serve on 13 subcommittees
of the Readiness Project Leadership Council. The Readiness Project's mission is to develop a strategic plan to implement
the Governor's vision for education in the Commonwealth. The subcommittees
have been asked to address specific issues - including early education
and care, long-term funding, curriculum alignment, and recruiting and
retaining educators - and will offer both interim and final reports with
recommendations for state action in November and February, respectively.

In August 2007, Governor Patrick launched his strategic plan for education
reform by appointing 21 members to lead the "Readiness Project." The Readiness
Project Leadership Council Chairs are: Jackie Jenkins-Scott, President, Wheelock
College; Tom Payzant, former Superintendent, Boston Public Schools; and Joseph
Tucci, EMC Corporation Chairman & CEO.
