Governor pledges more funding for early education This year, Massachusetts is spending $7.1 million, up from $4.6 million the year before. The Democratic governor told early education providers visiting the Statehouse on Tuesday that he'll increase the support in his upcoming budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Patrick declined to offer more specifics during a brief question & answer session with reporters. The "universal pre-kindergarten" program aims to prepare preschoolers for kindergarten and elementary school, with about 4,700 children currently served as a result of state grants to a range of providers. The pilot program prioritizes low-income children. |
